Our Story

Building the Future of Micropayments
More Than 25 Years in the Making

Jalda wasn't created because micropayments are a new idea. It was created because the technology, standards, and market have finally caught up.

Our team has spent decades at the intersection of telecommunications, payments, internet infrastructure, and digital commerce. Long before smartphones, app stores, and AI agents existed, we were already working to solve one of the internet's oldest challenges: how to make very small digital transactions commercially viable.

Today, we're bringing that vision back—built for a world of mobile operators, open standards, and AI-driven commerce.

From SafeTrader to Jalda

In 1998, several members of the Jalda founding team helped create SafeTrader, one of the world's earliest large-scale micropayment platforms. Originally initiated within Ericsson, SafeTrader later became a joint venture between Ericsson and Hewlett-Packard.

SafeTrader grew into an international organization of approximately 150 employees with operations in Stockholm, New Delhi, Denver, and Kuala Lumpur—an ambitious effort to create the payment infrastructure for digital content and internet services at a time when e-commerce itself was still in its infancy.

Ahead of Its Time

SafeTrader wasn't simply another payment product. The project collaborated with industry leaders including IBM and Nokia to establish what became a de facto payment standard for emerging digital services.

Gartner recognized SafeTrader as the leading payment solution of its time—even ahead of PayPal in its market positioning.

Although the technology was ahead of its time, the market wasn't. The dot-com crash of 2001 dramatically changed investment priorities across the technology industry, and the opportunity for widespread micropayments disappeared before the ecosystem was ready.

The problem, however, never went away.
